A Sprite Sheet Issue
« on: December 12, 2010, 06:42:58 PM »
Greetings once more everyone.
I have returned, and my quest is doing very well, however, I am using the bare necessities for it.
I am learning new scripting tactics, but I have a couple issues.

I right-click on Sprite Sheets In Project, and I click "Add New File To This Folder", and I select my SPT file, but when i go to open it, it shows an error screen, and my QD stops responding, and I am forced to shut down. Sometimes I do have the entities, but, for example, I want to add the _insideCastle sprite sheet, and it gives me the error message, and QD does not recognize the entity script, and when I open the script, the entity screen is blank.

Is there any way I can negate these issues and restore order to my quest?
Can anyone please help me on this?

That's an old bug in the qd.  When adding a sheet, don't let it automatically add entities.  You have to add them manually through the entity manager.

You can add entities, just uncheck the box for sounds.

Also, make sure you actually have the entity file. Sometimes if you compile with an entity in the entity manager that has been deleted... it will create a new blank entity file. So open it up in notepad if you still get an entity error.

Well, unfortunately, I can't even get to the screen where it tells me "such-and-such an entity was not found" and that check box for sounds.
When I add the entity, it gives me the blank screen.

@KOH:
If I open it in Notepad, do I copy/paste the whole thing over?

Yeah, that happens with me too, even when the right entities exist and are exactly where they need to be.  Like I said, if you just choose to not add any of the entities on that prompt, and add them in manually via the entity manager, you should be fine.

When you add a spritesheet to a folder, only sprites that have an entity box checked will automatically be added.
Otherwise just go to your entity manager and add them one file at a time.

When you open it in notepad, just make sure the script exists.

So if you already got the sheet added, just add in each entity script.

Alright. I tried both suggsestions, and neither one works for me, and I can't understand why.

Either that or I'm missing something important. It wouldn't be the first time.

Here's exactly everything I've done in a timeline:

I went on Open Zelda Quest Designer.
I opened "The Adventures of Lord Mykel: Blood Red Dawn".
I went to Entity Manager.
After KOH's suggestion, I made it so that all entities would "Open With...Notepad."
I selected _insideCastle entity script. That went well.
I went to Graphics Manager.
I opened _insideCastle Sprite Sheet.
I saw a blank screen with not one sprite highlighted for use. (When I say blank, I meant, all the sprites were there, but none of them had the blue squares around them indicating the ability to use them)
I went to test my quest.
A whole bunch of errors were shown in the entity script.
I don't know how to fix these errors, so I deleted both entity and sprite sheet.
I went to add _HyruleDungeon entity and sprite sheet.
I added the entity first, then the sprite sheet.
I went to click on _HyruleDungeon sprite sheet.
A message came up, saying something to the likes of "This sprite sheet cannot be opened."
I got a "Quest Designer has encountered an error and needs to close. We're sorry for any inconveniance. (bullcrap)" message.
I sent an error report.
I stood up and walked about to walk off my frustrations.
I sat back down, and went at it again.
This time, I added _Level8Dungeon entity and sprite sheet.
Lo and behold! It adds it perfectly.
I also tried adding _mothula sheets, but got the "Quest Designer has encountered an error and needs to close. We're sorry for any inconveniance. (bullcrap)" message once again.

I apologize for the lengthiness of this, but I have tried many sheets from this site:http://trac2.assembla.com/OpenZelda/browser/branch/OpenZelda-3.08.01/sprite%20sheets

I can only work Ganon's Tower, Tower of Hera, and Desert Temple sprite sheets. All others won't work. (Mind you, I did add those three BEFORE I changed all sheets to be opened with notepad)

One last question:
How do you revert the .zes and .spt files from notepad back to the "Windows cannot locate the files" style file?

When you transfer the spt file into your quest designer folder, did you also get the bmp file as well.
Even though you only add in the spt file in your QD, you'll need both versions.

Second, you choose "add" and not "create", right?

Third, if you choose those spritesheets then you need the proper entity file to go with it.

These are the scripts for every door dungeon script for this version.

Finally, Lukex made these long ago by him self, and can't guarantee these will even work properly.
So let's start over properly, shall we.

List me all the files you want to add to your game
We'll need to add them one at a time(like one spritesheet, all it's entitites for that sheet). Then we'll need to test it.
When I want to add an old file to my game, I take it from my Gems Of Mystery Source. I then look at it to make sure it has a decent sheet. Next, I take those old scripts and modify to work better for my game.

When I was starting Gems Of Mystery I took scripts from older quest packs and add them one at a time, and test them. When ever I tired one of Lukex's major updates all I got was error after error, so that's why I started to go a bit custom.

On the site I posted the link to in my previous reply, the sheets and entities I need are some of the ones on the site. These ones:

_Bridges
_Level8Dungeon
_InsideCastle
_HyruleDungeon
_DesertDungeon
_MountainTowerDungeon
_BossSheet1
_BossSheet2
_BossSheet3
_BossSheet4

I apologize if the list itself is long, I tried adding the SPT, BMP, and ZES files, but they won't go. At one point, I had the 2nd, 5th, and 6th sheets uploaded, but I lost them.
So, what is it I can do now? (To get to these sheets, as I said, copy/paste the link I used in my last comment)

What quest pack version are you using?
Some sheets will need modifying depending on your version.

The _Bridges has no entity script so I'll teach you how to add that sheet if you did not get it yet.

Make sure _Bridges does not already exist in your spritesheet manager, otherwise you could end up adding this file twice.
Download both the bmp and spt files for _Bridges.
Now copy and paste those files into your spritesheet folder.
Open up your QD and click on "Add File to Folder".
Choose the SPT file.
Make sure the include sounds box is unchecked.
Then choose OK.
Now you should be able to place the bridges in a screen.

Boss3 and Boss4 are made by Lukex so no idea how well they will work. Also these two files will need his journey.inc file or just some slight modifying.
BTW the entity files for these two files are "qe_boss3.zes" and "qe_boss4.zes"
I learned this by clicking on the spt files on his website and looking for the word entity.

2    [ENTITY]
3    qe_boss3 < see the name of the entity.
4    96
5    32
6    32
7    16

Well, I've now added pretty much every sprite sheet that lukex made on that site, plus the "Extra" files.

You know what i was doing wrong?
When I was adding the SPT files, they were in a seperate file folder. They weren't in "Sprite Sheets". They were in "Extra" and that is why it would not add.

I now have about 150-200 sprite sheets, and I MAY just see if I can find any more sheets on the Internet.
Do any of you know a good site that would have sheets and SPT files? (I want to try to find more LTTP sheets, and some Game Boy Zelda sheets, and maybe some other non-Zelda games)

Sprite sheets for LttP are all over the internet, but if you're looking for one certain sprite, or especially one animation, it's best to rip it directly from the game with an emulator. Ripped sprites can be directly used to make sprite sheets for OZ.

well, what i meant is:
are there any specific sites that have a bitmap file with the SPT and entity files?
I still am unclear as to how to rip sprites from the game.
I know HOW, but I can't create entity files for them because I do not know what commands to give my entities.
